Crossbreed Review

WTF is Crossbreed?

An inclusive, queer and fetish night out with a focus on music plus designated safe spaces for sex.

How did Crossbreed start?

Crossbreed was founded in 2019 by DJ/producer Kiwi, tired of bad music at kink parties and the dichotomy between clubbing and fetish scenes in London. Crossbreed's manifesto is abundantly clear that liberation will come from collaboration and co-creating a space where stigmas, prejudice and bigotry are absent. We'll see that can be tougher than expected.

Who is Crossbreed for?

Do you miss Berlin? Does rave music gives you the chills? Do gender fluidity and alternative sexualities are something you're comfortable with or curious about? Then Crossbreed is the right place for you. If you're not willing to make an extra-extra effort on a night out, if queer or fetish subcultures are a no-go, then no need to read further. You'll need to step out of your comfort zone and engage with guests to enjoy it.

Is Crossbreed members only?

Nah, no membership, you just need to buy a ticket and respect the dress code to get in (a few socials are entirely free though).

What's the dress code at Crossbreed?

Ranging from 'holographic nipple covers' to 'jock straps' via 50 shades of mesh. Think: fetwear, PVC, leather, jewelry, drag, boots, color, latex, naked skin, bondage, nylon, sportswear, metal, and lace. But mostly they just like non-normative expression. Rule of thumb is: if not everyone turns their head in shock seeing you in the tube, you probably won't get in. Warning, strictly NO FANCY DRESS à la Killing Kittens. Check their Instagram or their party albums for further inspiration.

What are the rules at Crossbreed?

🩲 Respect the dress code (see above).
📵 No phones on the dance floor or in the play area.
📸 No photos at the party.
🏃 No harassment.
🙅 No means no.
👋 Introduce yourself with your pronouns and don't misgender people.
✊🏿🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ No transphobia, homophobia, racial fetishisation or ableism.

What about the music at Crossbreed?

Mostly electronic music (on a very large spectrum). They have Spotify Dancefloor and Playroom playlists if you need a sneak peek.

How inclusive is Crossbreed?

Although they have had a party centered around queer people of color, most of their events are very white. Performative diversity is always better than no diversity at allI but we're not there yet. t's very much so queer-friendly, body positive though. They also try to accomodate people with disabilities when they can.

Where to find Crossbreed tickets and how much?

Between 10 and 20 quids, depending on the tiering (hello early birds!). As mentioned above, their socials are usually free. Their ticket booth lives on Resident Advisor.

Crossbreed alternatives?

In London, Klub Verboten (Torture Garden might be too mainstream to be compared to). In Berlin, probably the Berghain.

Our Take

With a great DJ lineup and an inclusive approach to fetish clubbing, Crossbreed is the rising sex-positive event open to all genders and sexualities. Joining the ranks of remarkably well-organized parties in London like Klub Verboten, their events moodily revives the vibe (and style) of Berlin's coolest night outs.

Performative diversity

Wouldn’t go alone. But, really does come across as a white person thing to me. Followed them on Instagram for a bit and their “diversity” seems so forced and performative.

The wellness area went the extra mile.

I went to my first with my (Asian, non binary) partner plus friends a while back and I enjoyed it a lot. Felt the vibe was more relaxed and the outfits more interesting and colourful than Klub Verboten which is just all black and very 'serious fun' sometimes. Lots of nice people who were all very friendly. I had a minor freakout moment and went to the wellness area where some lovely volunteers gave me a cup of tea with oat milk and a biscuit. TBH I barely went into the playroom, so it's possible to have that kind of night there. But my friend reported 'the best orgasm of my life' riding their sex robot thing...

Come for the party, stay for the people.

I think it's something that can only be enjoyed when the people who attend are open to meeting new people. This doesn't mean everyone should have sex with everyone, but the fun for me comes from socializing, making friends, and discovering new things. That being said, people are more open to socializing once the event is a few hours in. Fun fact: I'm on LVRSNFRNDS because I was extended a hand by some members when my evening had reached a low point at my first event, which I'm immensely grateful for. Finally, it's great for creating a pressure-free environment where people of various experiences and inclinations can be themselves.

Not overly queer, but queer-safe enough.

As a queer person, it seemed the playroom was prominently straight appearing sex, but it felt queer sex was/would be comfortable to engage in without it being a spectacle. Thought it would be a bit queerer, but then again I can't imagine any party of that size being as queer/queer-safe. Edit (5/10/2021): I felt more comfortable in subsequent parties.

More enjoyable than expected.

I enjoyed it more than I expected to. I originally wanted to go alone because I wanted to be able to arrive & leave without being beholden to anyone, but I was also glad I knew some LVRSNFRNDS people there. I expected to see more gender expression in the space, and because most AFAB people were dressed more femme/feminine I didn’t feel entirely comfortable stripping down to my jockstrap as an AFAB person. But next time I intend to be braver and express my masculinity more.

Yeah, reading our review is great but...

What if you could have access to a safe community of folks to buddy up with for your next Crossbreed?
